I might actually like this more than apple pie. It’s certainly a whole lot easier to throw together.
Oven: 190°C/375°F
-
4 cups Apple pieces
-
¼ cup Orange Juice (see note)
-
1 cup Sugar
-
¾ cup Flour
-
½ tsp Cinnamon
-
¼ tsp Nutmeg
-
112g (½ cup) Butter, at room temperature
Combine sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, butter until it has a crumbly even texture.
Peel, core, then dice apples. Sprinkle orange juice over apple slices.
Put apple dice in baking dish, put crumbs over.
Bake 45 minutes at 190°C/375°F
Note: I never make this with orange juice. This is what the original recipe calls for. More typically I would toss the apple with just a little lemon juice.
Now that I live at altitude I find this recipe is weirdly challenging. My current approach is to reduce apple juice down first, then toss the apple pieces with it.
